Aging is considered the sociological and biological process where human beings encounter experiences and achieve certain social and biological maturation stages. Aging is considered a relatively objective biological process where one gets old and experiences different biological developments (Biggs, Hendricks, and Lowenstei, 2020). This paper will focus on the sociological perspective of aging and why sociology is significant in studying aging. Aging can be considered a combination of psychological, biological, and social processes that influence people as they grow old.

Sociological Perspective on Aging

Sociological perspectives of aging focus on the changes in a person’s relationships and roles. The sociological perspectives of aging indicate that aging differs from person to person (Kunkel, Brown, and Whittington, 2014). Although sociological perspectives of aging primarily focus on the later years of life, it’s clear that aging people is a lifelong process that includes growing up and older. Each person tends to experience age-linked changes that are based on many factors. There are different sociological perspectives on aging, such as the social changes that impact aging, the role of sociologists in interpreting the issues of life activity phases, and the significance of culture and society in aging.

The sociological perspectives of aging include social conflict, symbolic interaction, and structural function. The structural function perspective considers aging as a compulsory process for the maintenance of society. The social conflict perspective considers aging as a process that leads to inequality and oppression. The symbolic interaction perspective views aging as a process that affects how people interact with each other.
